Manaaki Takata Policy
Guiding Statement
He Oranga Pounamu recognises that its staff is an important and valuable resource and that it has a responsibility to promote their health and safety. He Oranga Pounamu has implemented this policy to ensure safe drinking practices during work functions and work associated events.
Drinking alcohol is a choice we make. Manaaki takata is about choosing to care for people in how we drink and in how we serve alcohol. One person misusing alcohol means others are caught up in the consequences.
He Oranga Pounamu recognizes that alcohol is both a popular drink and powerful drug. Because it is so common we can forget that it should be treated carefully. It is one of the most commonly used drugs in Aotearoa and we frequently under-estimate it's affect on us and our whanau.
Objectives
This policy is designed to support the reduction of alcohol related harm in and around the workplace. The policy is in place out of aroha. He Oranga Pounamu is committed to role modeling appropriate behavior and the safe use of alcohol, it will do this by:
- Whenever alcohol is served substantial kai will be available
- Whenever alcohol is being served a range of non alcohol beverages will be available
- To limit serving times of alcohol
- He Oranga Pounamu does not accept drunkenness at work related functions; anyone who becomes intoxicated will not be served further alcohol. If any such situation occurs every effort will be made to ensure the persons safety
- He Oranga Pounamu does not give alcohol as a koha
- He Oranga Pounamu do not permit rakatahi under the age of 18 to drink alcohol at any work related functions and do not permit anybody to provide them with alcohol
- Tamariki at work related gatherings where adults are drinking must be supervised by a non drinking adult
- He Oranga Pounamu does not purchase alcohol for work related functions and do not cover the costs of any alcohol consumed while staff or guests are traveling on work related business
- Taxi chits will be made available for staff attending work functions where alcohol maybe present
- When staff or guests are required to travel on behalf of He Oranga Pounamu they will be briefed on this policy and expected to conform to it
- He Oranga Pounamu believes that this policy is consistent with the overall aim and values of the organization.
