He Waka Tapu was set up by Daryl Gregory in 1996 primarily to provide a Kaupapa Māori service for Māori men and their whanau experiencing domestic violence.

He Waka Tapu today has broadened its scope considerably and can now offer an extensive range of services to whanau.

Some of those services are: running stopping violence groups for men, wahine and rangatahi. We have a problem gambling service for those struggling with this issue and their whanau. We have an alcohol & other drugs assessment service and accompanying day programme, for which we also can provide some supported accommodation options.

Throughout the year we also run a number of specific wananga for rangatahi, wahine and the entire whanau. He Waka Tapu also has a Whanau Ora health service which includes fitness and gentle exercise programmes, nutrition and healthy cooking classes, health education and promotion as well as specific health services to wahine Māori around breast and cervical screening issues.

Services are delivered using a kaupapa Māori framework encompassing Tinana (physical well-being), Wairua (spiritual well-being), Hinengaro (mental well-being), whanau (family well-being) and whanau whanui (community well-being). Underpinning this approach are cultural values and processes, supported by our Kaumatua. There is a formal referral process which must be completed before accessing any services. For further information about our referral process or any of our programmes, please contact our office on 373-8150
