Te Putea Manaaki Canterbury Earthquake Fund

 

Te Putea Manaaki Canterbury Earthquake Fund was established following the earthquake on 4 September 2010 which affected many homes in the Canterbury region. The significance of the damage and effect to people’s lives in the region from that and the subsequent aftershocks has led to Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu, other iwi, individuals, groups, organisations and businesses donating sums of money to be allocated to the residents of Canterbury affected by the earthquake.

 

Relief grants

In order to assist those who have suffered hardship as a result of the earthquake, Te Runanga O Ngai Tahu is inviting those who have experienced significant effects on their financial situation, are in situations of serious hardship and where other avenues of assistance are not available or are already being utilised to make application.

 

The purpose of this fund is to provide assistance of up to $500 per individual or up to $1,000 per whanau who, as a result of the Canterbury Earthquake require:


1) Support of whanau health and social needs (whanau wellbeing) arising from the Earthquakes;
2) Provision of home heating required as a result of the Earthquakes; and
3) Assistance with immediate or urgent assistance with day to day living essentials arising as a direct result of the Earthquakes; and
4) Assistance with relocation as a direct result of the earthquakes.

 

Applicants are encouraged to seek what other assistance they may be entitled to for example (from their local council, Red Cross or government agencies) before completing this application.

Criteria


In order to be eligible for this grant:

 

The individual or whanau must be experiencing hardship as a result of the Canterbury earthquakes and are faced with:
1) Financial Hardship: Inability to meet basic costs of living as a result of the Earthquakes i.e. unemployment, unanticipated expenses i.e. rates, legal or specialist advice, shared households;

2) Isolation – Inability to complete basic family tasks relating to transport (shopping for household goods, participation in recreational activities i.e.; sports practices, contact with whānau, community events or functions, participation in educational or development activities i.e. attendance at school, course, university);

3) Physiological Deprivation - Families are unable to maintain a minimum level of warmth, comfort, physical wellbeing in their homes as a result of the earthquakes;

4) Relocation - As a result of the earthquakes individuals or families require support with costs associated with relocating to another property or area;

5) Exhausted all other avenues of support; Families sought support from a range of existing pathways (Red Cross Grants, WINZ, HNZ)

6) Been resident in Canterbury district on either 4 September 2010, 22 February 2011 or 13 June 2011

Only one application will be considered per household (flatmates should apply jointly and bank account details should match names on the lease) and the grant is given on a one-off basis.
